Seastar Parasite

Turn over a blue linckia seastar and you are likely to find this little limpet, Thyca crystallina, living underneath. The limpets match the periwinkle color of their host perfectly. They feed by embedding their proboscis into the arm of the seastar. Since they are permanently attached to their host seastar, the large female limpets often have dwarf males living under their shells. Amed, Bali. June 2013. Photo: Sara Simmonds
